Why Solar Control Glass Is No Longer Confined to Premium Homes

Cast your mind back to summer 2022. For the first time on record, temperatures in the UK exceeded 40°C. Summers in the UK are now regularly exceeding comfortable levels, and the conversation around how we build and glaze our homes needs to reflect that. 

For years, our industry has focused on keeping homes warm. Now, we're being asked a different question entirely: how do we cool them down? 

The Met Office has confirmed that heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense and are lasting longer. What felt like an anomaly three summers ago is increasingly the baseline we're planning around. The homes and commercial buildings we're glazing today need to be ready for it. 

 

The Conversation We Need to Have 

As energy bills rose and older homes underperformed against thermal insulation targets, the fenestration industry stepped up with conversations on energy efficiency and installed glass that retained heat inside homes. 

During this time, solar control glass was a conversation reserved for premium home applications. But it now needs to be looked at as a sensible baseline for any home with significant glazing. Our climate is changing, and customers are looking at their homes and seeking better solutions. As an industry, we now need to step up once again.  

Whether it’s a south-facing living room, a large kitchen extension, or a glazed roof lantern, these are spaces that were already uncomfortably warm during the summer months. But as temperatures continue to rise, that temporary discomfort is moving into longer periods of frustration, as trapped heat in the home starts to affect sleep, productivity and, in vulnerable households, can become a genuine health concern. 

The glass we specify in these spaces is either part of the solution or part of the problem. There isn't really a middle ground anymore. 

 

The Regulatory Picture 

It's worth noting that this isn't just a climate argument. It's increasingly a compliance one too. 

Part O of the Building Regulations, which came into force for new builds in 2022, requires new homes to limit solar gain and provide adequate means of reducing internal temperatures. Solar control glazing is one of the primary tools for meeting that requirement, and with the Future Homes Standard now confirmed and mandatory compliance approaching from March 2028, the performance expectations around overheating mitigation will only tighten further. 

The regulatory and climate directions are both pointing the same way. The onus on installers and fabricators is to have these conversations with homeowners early enough in the process to make a meaningful difference. 

 

The Cost Argument 

Air conditioning use in UK homes is rising; however, the right glass specification at the point of installation can significantly reduce the need for these expensive installations.  

The price difference between a standard specification and a well-chosen solar control glass is modest when set against the long-term savings on energy bills, the improved comfort of the space and the increasing likelihood that a home without it will need to be retrofitted at greater cost further down the line. It's an investment that pays back, and it's an argument that resonates with homeowners when it's made both clearly and honestly. 

The challenge, as ever, is that the conversation needs to be made. When a new installation focuses on frame colour, handle finish and lead time rather than the performance of the glass itself, we're doing the homeowner a disservice, and we're leaving value on the table that should have been part of the specification from the outset. 

 

What This Means in Practice

Installers are being asked questions by homeowners that they weren't being asked five years ago, about overheating, about energy bills, about what the glass in their new extension is actually going to do in the next inevitable heatwave.
